It is a scenario that has happened in nearly all of our lives: You’re sitting on the couch enjoying a warm cup of coffee, when out of the blue, you just so happen to drop the mug on the carpet. This incident, which many of us have experienced, can be even more disheartening when you sign a lease on an apartment that you strive to keep it clean and neat.
No matter how clean you keep your home, carpet stains are bound to happen. You don’t need harsh chemicals or an expensive cleaning service to lift those pesky stains. Tackle them yourself with these green solutions for carpet stains.
- Before you attempt to lift the stain, be sure to sweep and vacuum the area of carpet you wish to clean. Test all stain removing mixtures in a closet before using it in a common area.
- Mix two parts cornmeal with one part borax to create a stain fighting carpet cleaner that also deodorizes. Simply sprinkle the mixture over the carpet, let sit for an hour, then vacuum.
- Mix equal parts of water and vinegar to create a pre -treating stain solution. Scrub the stain with the mixture and let sit for approximately fifteen minutes. Take a towel and dab to lift as much of the dampness as possible.
- Use a mixture of lemon juice and salt for tough stains on carpet. Follow the cleaning instructions in the previous step.
Of course, there are harsh chemicals you can use to pick up carpet stains. But, if you want to simply remove a stain without leaving any harsh residues behind, consider employing one of the green solutions listed above.
